Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The 2019 Bald Mountain Chardonnay is all about terroir. The own rooted 30 year old vines grow deep into the white sandy Zayante soils which is a highly decomposed ancient seabed lifted into the mountains by tectonic movement. The wine has a powerful saline minerality and fine acidity from the cooling ocean breeze. The wine was aged in 20% new French oak that accentuates the terroir of Bald Mountain Vineyard without overpowering it. The palate is medium-light in body with primary fruit flavors or Meyer lemon, yellow apple and crunchy asian pear. This wine will get better and better with time and I firmly believe this wine should be rested for at least 2-3 more years for it to really hit its stride. The wine is delicious now, but the best side of this wine will emerge with a bit of time (drink now - 2025). If consuming this wine in its youth, please decant for at least an hour and serve at or just below cellar temperature (50-55F) in a large Burgundy stem, please not too cold or the wine’s personality will be lost.
Vineyard Notes
Bald Mountain Vineyard, located in Bonny Doon, is owned and farmed by Beauregard Vineyards. Planted in 1990, the 32 acre vineyard sits at an elevation of 920 to 1050 feet on a southwest facing slope. Monterey Bay marine influences combine with the rare white sandy Zayante soil to produces wines with minerality and striking acidity.
Production Notes
The grapes were hand harvested, stemmed, and crushed. Native yeast fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks. The wine was put into the finest French Oak we have in our cellar with about 20% new barrels and aged for 18 months.
Winemaker Notes
The 2019 season had a cool wet spring and a cooler growing season that let the grapes mature gradually giving this vintage superb full flavors, fresh acidity, and excellent balance.
