Our Vineyards

The Vineyards

“Wine is made in the vineyard. Period. To this credit, at Beauregard we take great pride in the vineyards we grow and purchase fruit from. Our vineyard collections to this date come from years of family commitment and from admiration and sustainable partnerships with other farmers. My belief is that the Santa Cruz Mountains produce grapes of unparalleled quality and I have based my entire life’s work on this belief. When I step foot into a vineyard, I know by looking at the soil, the surroundings and the vines what the wine’s potential is. I look for high elevation, non-loamy soils, coastal fog, low crop yields, and slow ripening. These conditions yield wines with minerality, acidity and structure. These are wines that are age worthy and can be produced with full flavor at low alcohol levels. Life is short, and because of this I will only make wines from notable sites in partnership with the most skilled growers.” – Ryan Beauregard

Beauregard Ranch Estate

This vineyard site was part of an original 160-acre vineyard and apple orchard planted in the early 1900’s known as the Quistorf Ranch. The vineyard was abandoned during prohibition and then resurrected in 1949 when retired Sheriff’s deputy Amos Beauregard (Ryan Beauregard’s Great-Grandfather) purchased the property. At the time, it was planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay & Muller-Thurgau (a grape similar to Riesling). It has since been replanted in 1980 and then again in 2005.

The Beauregard Ranch vineyard is located in the heart of the Ben Lomond Mountain (Bonny Doon) and sits at an elevation of 1700 to 1850 feet on a southwest facing slope. Monterey Bay marine influences combine with sandy loam soil to produce wines with minerality and striking acidity. Plantings: Four acres Pinot noir, clones of Pommard, 667 & 115. One acre Chardonnay, clone 4. Three acres Zinfandel, clone Primitivo. Four acres Cabernet Sauvignon, Dijon clone.

Bald Mountain Vineyard Estate

Planted in 1989 by Jim and Emmet (Bud) Beaureagrd. The 40 acre property consists of 31.5 acres of vineyard.

The clone 4 (Old Wente Clone) was selected and was planted on native root stock.

The soil profile of the vineyard is Zayante Sand with underlying sandstone bedrock and a distance from the Pacific Ocean of 2.91 miles at an elevation of 923 – 1,111 feet.

The long and cold growing season retains striking acidity in the wine while the sandy soils contribute a unique minerallity. The evening fog from the Pacific Ocean contributes an extremely rare salinity that is found in only a handful of vineyards in California.

Bald Mountain is certainly a unicorn vineyard and a treasure of the Santa Cruz Mountains Viticultural Area.
