The Beauregard 2016 Meritage is inspired by the Right Bank of Bordeaux, specifically Pomerol which coincidentally there is a winery called Château Beauregard (there is no family connection). Right Bank Bordeaux is predominantly Merlot. This particular wine is composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. 100% Santa Cruz Mountains, of course. What you will find in the glass is a juxtaposition of silky vs mineraly all at the same time. This wine is reminiscent of a soft sheet filled with gravel (in a good way somehow). Despite the nearly three years under cork, the wine is vibrant and fresh which tells me that this wine will age gracefully for at least two decades. However, the wine is drinking at its peak of quality, pair with Prime Rib for a classic and timeless pairing.
The wine has a highly concentrated garnet red center moving to a light garnet/ slight purplish rim. The aromas are ripe, yet balanced, showing notes of red and black currants, black plum, black cherry, leather, cedar, wet rocks, sandalwood and fresh vanilla bean. The palate is full bodied and multi-layered with a perfect harmony between ripe fruit, oak and earth. This wine is still in its youth and will be best if left to rest for 2-3 years before drinking, although those of you who enjoy ripe and primary fruit will be blown away. I recommend decanting this wine for 1 hour or more and serving it at about 60-65 degrees out of a large Bordeaux stem. This is a wine that will be best with a great meal which needs something like a Rib Eye with some nice marbling.
