Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Old vines are very expressive of terroir because the roots have had decades to dig down deep into the earth. The 2018 Pinot Noir from Cave Gulch is a beautiful example of those classic Santa Cruz Mountains flavors. The aromatics are vibrant and will fill the room upon opening the bottle with notes of pine resin and redwood duff. The palate is ripe strawberry complementing the flavors that mirror the nose. There is a long mouth watering finish that lingers on the palate to give you time to think about the depths of the wine.
Vineyard Notes
A few years ago I got an opportunity to farm Cave Gulch Vineyard, a small 1 acre vineyard on the very edge of Wilder Ranch, that held the oldest Pinot Noir Vines in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We only made one other vintage in 2017 and the 2018 is the last. The tonnage was just too small for it to be practical enough to continue farming it.
Production Notes
The 2018 vintage was textbook perfect for vineyards in Santa Cruz with slow ripening caused by a cooler growing season. The yields were light but that led to higher quality wines. From this small vineyard we were able to produce 1 barrel of wine. Too small to be released in our tasting room or wine club, but perfect for those of you doing a little holiday shopping today. This is a rare bottling that any wine enthusiast will truly appreciate.
