Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
On the nose, the wine is ripe yet has an old world flare akin to a modern classified red wine from Bordeaux. There are notes of ripe black currants, black plum, cassis, leather, red tobacco, cedar, wet rocks, toasted oak and delicate oak spices. The palate is full bodied and multi-layered with a beautiful harmony between ripe fruit, oak, and earth flavors which reflect the nose. The finish is lengthy and fades slowly. I highly advise waiting until the wine has 7-8 years of bottle age to really discover the true beauty these wines have the ability to show. The fruit will eventually integrate, the savory notes will emerge, and the wine will slowly change and show a personality similar to top Bordeaux with a touch more flesh and texture on the palate. Only time will allow this, so be patient.
Winemaker Notes
I am very proud of this wine and I think you will find that the consistency of this wine over the years is showing very specific terroir that I couldn't be happier with. The smell of the wine transports me back to my youth where I would ride my dirt bike on the roads and inhale the fragrance and pure dust as I rode. The 2017 was the second most difficult vintage of my life, with number one being 2020 amidst the CZU Lightning Complex Fire. In 2017 the grapes slowly ripened through August in which was lining up to be a lengthy ripening. Then, on Labor Day weekend we were plagued with a historic heat wave. Temperatures spiked to 113 degrees and stayed there for three days. At night the temperatures dropped to only 105. We went into a panic to pick the grapes, lucky for me I have long term friendships with other farmers who were able to allocate me some of their labor. All said and done, we were able to successfully make a quality wine while many other wineries lost their crops to the heat.
