Santa Cruz Mountains
Stylistically, this wine is a Late Bottled Vintage Port. Barreled for 10 years and bottle aged for another 7. The wine is sweet with big and bold flavors to a balance it out of blackberry, raspberry, cinnamon and chocolate.
In 2004, I had an idea to make a port out of Zinfandel from my Grandfather's vines. I let the fruit hang on the vines for a long period of time and brought it into the winery. The must fermented in a 1/2 ton fermenter usually reserved for picking grapes into. The long maceration time was arrested at around 5% residual sugar by moving the fermentation into a large walk-in freezer and also adding a large amount of nicely aged brandy.
